How to Mix Natural Cacao Hot Chocolate

Natural cacao offers more exquisite flavors and more beneficial compounds than alkalized cocoa. It also requires a little more mixing, but the difference is minimal — and the flavor is worth it.

Here at Powder Hound, we have a fun, easy way to mix hot chocolate perfectly.

When our co-founder, Andrea, was growing up in Colombia, her mom made hot chocolate every morning using an olleta (a metal pot) and a molinillo (a wooden frother). These tools have been used for generations to make hot chocolate. They mix ingredients perfectly and create a gorgeous froth — considered a hallmark of high-quality cacao.

Outside of Latin America, few people have olletas and molinillos. But nearly everyone has a measuring cup and a whisk, which work just as well.

So here's the easiest, most fun way to mix Powder Hound Hot Chocolate:

  1. Put milk (dairy or non-dairy) in a measuring cup and microwave until hot.
  2. Add Powder Hound Hot Chocolate.
  3. Put the whisk in the measuring cup, and roll the whisk handle back and forth between your palms.

In no time, you'll have perfectly mixed Powder Hound Hot Chocolate with a gorgeous froth on top.

Note for parents: kids LOVE rolling the whisk between their palms — it's a great way to get them involved in the process.

If you'd like to make hot chocolate the traditional Colombian way, here's where you can buy an olleta and a molinillo. Note that modern olleta's are metal and designed for stovetops.
